Tiara Watch of the Day: March 3

On Sunday, the King and Queen of Spain welcomed the President of Colombia and his wife for their state visit to Spain.
For the welcome ceremony, Letizia wore a repeated dress from Spanish label Oky^Coky which has the look of separates (but isn't) with a Felipe Varela black coat and Magrit beige heels. I do like the mix of textures here and the softness added by the blouse portion, but this is a state visit, and this isn't what we're here for.
There we go! Monday night gave us what we needed, a gala dinner complete with tiara (the Spanish Floral Tiara, worn with her wedding earrings which were a gift from King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia, her fleur de lys brooch, and the riband and star from Colombia's Order of Boyaca). Queen Letizia's Varela dress is another repeat, originally worn for the Dutch inauguration in 2013:
I was definitely a fan of this ensemble at its original appearance, with a jaunty hat (so many of you couldn't handle the angle, but I liked it) and the color worked quite nicely with the light blue of her Spanish sash. The dress is still lovely as ever and she looks fantastic - but I can't help but note that I am starting to see a pattern emerge from her recent tiara appearances.
Take a look at the 2014 Mexican state visit, or her Carolina Herrera black gown from last October's state visit (which I loved, but still). You take a sheer neckline, a slim silhouette, add in some lace or other doodads, throw the Spanish Floral Tiara on top, and VOILA! You've got yourself a Letizia tiara appearance. Anyone else feeling my déjà vu here?
But there is a positive side to all these similar appearances: Letizia has apparently switched her favorite tiara from the Prussian Diamond Tiara (worn for her wedding, and for the majority of her subsequent tiara appearances) to the floral tiara, and that's a change I can get behind. She can wear that bauble all she likes, right up until she decides she should give it to me instead, ahem.

Royal Outfits of the Day: January 19

    A red suit showdown!
King Philippe and Queen Mathilde attended another New Year's reception last week
Mathilde's entry is a repeat from the couple's introductory visit to Germany last year, a red suit with pleated details by Pierre Gauthier.
    The original appearance, in Germany
Better without the hat? I think so. The suit's plenty of pleating all by itself.

And over in Spain, on the same day, an entry from Letizia:
King Felipe and Queen Letizia gave out the National Research Awards last week
I've always liked this Felipe Varela suit, with its delicate scalloped detailing, and red is definitely Letizia's color. Both she and Felipe were wearing bracelets from ARHOE, an organization that promotes more rational working hours and a better balance between work and life in Spain. The group was included in one of the couple's recent palace audiences, and they've apparently won some royal support. A yellow bracelet with a red suit is certainly an effective way to draw attention.
So, who comes out on top in this style duel? Red suits in general, probably. More of that all around would be fine by me.

Royal Outfit of the Day: January 7

The first formal event of the year for the King and Queen of Spain was held yesterday, the first Pascua Militar (a military ceremony) of Felipe's reign.
Letizia repeats outfits a lot for this event; the formal dress code requires a long dress, but it's during the day so an evening gown isn't really the thing, and that often means special selections which are understandably worn again. This year's repeat was brand new just last year, a Felipe Varela teal number with motifs on the sides. It's a plain dress when you're standing straight forward, and an embellished one when you turn to the side, a two-for-one deal. What a bargain.
A do-over dress leaves me free to contemplate the earrings, and I am intrigued. She's worn these before, in Rome in November last year (I feel really weird calling 2014 last year, by the way), but this is the first time I've paid them the attention they deserve.
These are from Tous, a Spanish jeweler she wears often, and they have emerald, chrysoprase, green tourmaline, turquoise, ruby, opal, and pink quartz, all in 18-carat yellow gold. Half a rainbow for one side of the head, half for the other. LOVE. The Earring Queen wins again.

Royal Outfit Grab Bag of the Day: December 9

'Tis time once again to pull a random assortment of recent outfits from some of our regulars, a little sampler platter of sartorial happenings, from which to pick and choose.

Been a while since we featured Mette-Marit here. But whenever she does pop up, there's a good chance she'll be sporting this dress, or so it seems. The By Ti Mo model (which she owns in another color/print too) must be on her list of personal favorites for 2014.
Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit attended the 75th Anniversary of the Norwegian People's Aid on Friday.

Queen Letizia brought back the oops-I-ran-out-of-fabric dress from National Day.
The Spanish Royal Family attended the National Sports Awards on Thursday.
"Listen, dear, I don't want to alarm you, but there's a different dress on the back of your dress." Felipe, clearly concerned.
And she's still making this the year of earrings, I see. (Which I am all for, though long time readers know overly matchy accessories make me twitchy and this plus the shoes it a bit much.)

Máxima stood outside in a shiny turban. As one does.
King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima attended a ceremony to award the Military Order of William on Thursday.
It's not so bad with the coat closed. It ties the whole thing together more than it does when the coat is open. She looks cozy, I'll give her that. If you want to see it the other way, you can click here for a gallery. Or you can leave it at this and I wouldn't blame you.

And finally, in Denmark, Mary hosted a Christmas reception for her foundation.
It's a new Dolce & Gabbana number (per StyleofMary) and I'm all over this. A simple red dress? Perfect. We'll end it on a high note.

Royal Outfits of the Day: November 25

How about a grab bag of recent royal outfits today? A grab bag specifically from our new and new-ish group of queen consorts. Let's do it:

I've been thinking about it, and I've decided that Queen Mathilde might be the most Diane Lockhart-esque out of our new batch of queens. And this little number above has Diane written all over it. (It's possible that I've been catching up on The Good Wife and admiring all that expensive fancy lawyer work wear, yes.)
Queen Mathilde and King Philippe visited Cerfontaine last week.
Not all the time, mind you. Big color and big volume? Not so much.

Queen Máxima and King Willem-Alexander attended a concert on Friday.
I'm also going to give this one a not so much. Has potential, but the (lack of) finishing details are everything.

Queen Letizia attended a conference in Rome last week.
This passes muster, I think. It does, however, look like it used to be a crop top, and then someone realized that pope was going to be hanging around, and decided to fill in that middle section right quick.
    He seems to dig it.

Letizia wasn't quite done with the red:
King Felipe and Queen Letizia celebrated the anniversary of the Spanish National Research Council yesterday.
The orange-ness of this red is testing my  love of Letizia in red. Never mind what I said about the ex-crop top, I'll take that one instead, thanks.

Royal Outfit of the Day: November 20, Plus a Programming Note

The blog will return on Sunday with another round of tidbits!

I leave you with the latest in our series of new sovereign introductory visits - Felipe and Letizia visiting Italy yesterday. The repeated Varela suit is not too bad, though I'd take an evening stroll in Rome over it any day.
